Chaplain's Office

The role of the University Chaplain is a comprehensive one, which includes providing leadership in campus worship, discipleship, spiritual formation and pastoral care. The Chaplain ministers primarily to undergraduate students, assisting also with the needs of graduate students, faculty, staff and administration.

I'm sitting in my office in Metzger... looking out my window on the world... and occasionally waving to "those who pass by." It has been fun this year to reflect on 41 (count 'em!) years of ministry at Biola University... what an incredible journey! Who would have guessed what our Lord desired to do with “the little dangling participle from Colorado” who arrived as a transfer student in 1957? How I wish I had journaled then so I had accurate recall on what I was actually feeling. Here’s what I do remember:

* I loved Jesus and wanted my life to count for His kingdom
* I was scared to death to speak to groups... but felt called to preach God’s Word
* So many of my classmates were years ahead of me spiritually... they were genuine
* My body was still thawing out from a year of Bible school in Canada & 20 below zero!

In the next four years at Biola, I made major steps in growing up spiritually. I sat under godly instructors whose lives matched their lectures. Friends on the basketball team (yeah, I played ball... sincerely, but not well) mentored me and held me accountable. Many of these individuals have been my life-long friends. And the Lord opened many doors of ministry where I was allowed to "practice" my stuff on others. Even the few times I attended Torrey Memorial Bible Conference and Missions Conference had a powerful impact on my life and thinking.

As University Chaplain I work with many others on chapels... and Torrey Conference... other campus events. But my major focus... honestly... is you! It would be an honor to talk or pray together, to sip a cup of coffee (preferably with a donut to dunk), or just hang out. It would be my privilege to invest in your life and get to know you. Along with my staff here in Metzger, we are committed to:

Loving God...
Serving Christ...
Touching lives!
